How do you find inspiration for your stories and characters?
I find inspiration for stories and characters all around, but mostly it is from my international travels. I have spent almost my entire adult life living
abroad, and have experienced many different countries and cultures. A lot of the characters I’ve met have featured in my books, and almost all of the stories I’ve written have been set in a location in which I have either lived or spent an extended period of time.
What are the things in life that truly excite you and how do they transpose into your writing?
In short, it’s travel and the people and places I meet and experience that really form the foundation of my writing. If I’m not travelling, I am planning a trip. For me, travel is life and I can’t imagine not doing it.
Can you tell us about a book that significantly impacted your life and your decision to become an author?
Shantaram, a book by Gregory David Roberts, was a real game changer for me. I read this before I had any idea I wanted to become a novelist, but once I started down that path it was Shantaram that really inspired me. Just outstanding, emotional storytelling, and wonderful characters. Of course, more niche for me was anything by Clive Cussler, another true inspiration and more akin to the books I actually write.
Looking back at your journey so far, what is one thing you would have done differently?
Some people think I’m prolific, as I have published quite a few books in just 6-7 years. However, I’ve never really had a steady writing schedule. If I had realised sooner that little and often was a better method of productivity for me, I would have written many more books by now.
How has your background (cultural, geographical, professional, etc.) influenced your writing style and the stories you choose to tell?”
Following on from the last question, I have a degree in anthropology, archaeology and art history, and it is my fascination with the world and all things in it that come through in my books and my writing, or at least that’s my intention. The character I am best known for, Hiram Kane, is essentially living the life I often lead, just in fictional form and with a few extra bad guys thrown in. Kane is much better looking, sadly.
Can you tell us about any upcoming projects you’re excited about?
Yes, I am working with a good friend on a new series of crime mysteries set in the Pacific North West, a region of the U.S. I know very well. I’m super excited about this series, as it’s the first time I’ve written to market… in other words, I’m focusing on the marketability of the books rather than writing what I want. We’re aiming for a 10-book series, and hope to launch the first 3-4 novels next summer.
What of your book(s) are you the most proudest of, and why?
I am most proud of my debut novel, a literary fiction coming-of-age tale, titled I Have Lived Today. I had never written fiction before and this book came about after a challenge by my wife Leslie. I wrote it in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), and it was here it all started for me.
What is your most recent book and/or what are you working on currently?
My last launch was Hiram Kane #10, Killing Koreana. I’m currently working on the latest Alexandria Ridley vigilante thriller, as well as outlining the crime series I mentioned earlier, featuring Jay Corrigan.
Is there a book project you have in mind that you plan to write one day? If so, can you tell us a little bit about it?
The book I most want to write is the sequel to my debut, I Have Lived Today. There was a character in that story, named Tramp, who, although not in it that much, was pivotal to the story, much like Magwitch in Dickens’ Great Expectations. That guy deserves his own novel, and I will get to it one day. It is long overdue.
